About FCNMAM

As Malaysia’s very first Federation for ROS-registered societies/associations (PPM No: PPM-001-10-08062009) which objectives include the promotion of complementary/adjunct treatment modalities for managing chronic health disorders (non-communicable diseases or NCDs). Local research suggests that NCDs have affected Malaysians more severely than the global average (Mal Fam Phys 2008; 3(1):7-13). Indeed, NCDs have become a local epidemic (Med J Malaysia 2017; 72(2): 106-12) contributing to the majority of premature deaths in this region (The Lancet 2011; 337: 680-89).

Complementary medicine practitioners would encourage their patients to actively undertake dietary and lifestyle modifications besides seeking adjunct or supportive treatment to complement allopathic doctors. These services are not new. According to World Health Organisation (2001), 80% of the population in developing and underdeveloped countries depends almost entirely on traditional herbal and natural medicines for their primary healthcare needs. Since 2004, all W.H.O. member countries have endorsed its document entitled The Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. FCNMAM considers the instituting of lifestyle, etc modifications be ideally administered by practitioners of the various complementary modalities.

The provision of evidence-based preventive healthcare is an objective its associations’ practitioners aim to accomplish as part of their qualifying programmes accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.

Since its registration in 2009, the Federation societies’ practitioners maintain a high standard of practice and adhere to their Codes of Practice. Recently, YB Menteri Kesihatan has renewed FCNMAM status as a ‘designated’ medical practitioner body for complementary medicine.  Click here to read more

The Federation of Complementary and Natural Medical Associations Malaysia (FCNMAM) is an umbrella body for professional associations/societies registered with the Registrar of Societies and whose objectives include the promotion of treatment/wellness services linked to natural and complementary medicine. All such associations are welcome to join so long as they meet the admission criteria set by the Constitution of FCNMAM, which guides its member societies in establishing a high standard of professional Code of Practice, securing professional indemnity insurance for their practitioners, developing qualifying/ academic curricula for accreditation with the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, and providing a united stand on common issues affecting the practice of natural and complementary medicine at the national level.
Currently, the Federation is a designated complementary medicine practitioner body under section 6(1)(d) of the Traditional and Complementary Act 2016 (Act 775).  Section 3 of the Act defines the “practice of traditional and complementary medicine” as “a form of health-related practice designed to prevent, treat or manage ailment or illness or preserve the mental and physical well-being of an individual ….”  The health-related focus of practitioners within the Federation membership is the provision of adjunct therapies for  chronic health disorders (non-communicable diseases or NCDs).

The treatment of NCDs represents the bulk of the Malaysian annual health budget. Within South East Asia, NCDs account for more than 60% of deaths. According to the World Health Organisation, global NCDs account for more than 40 million pre-mature deaths every year. These alarming figures have led to W.H.O calling for a 25% reduction of these premature deaths by 2025 by lowering the key risk factors such as poor dietary and lifestyle habits. Consequently, complementary medicine is poised to play a major role in helping to reduce the high incidence of NCDs in this country.

Research studies at leading local universities have shown a higher percentage of Malaysians use complementary medicine compared to neighbouring countries. Multi-racial Malaysia has brought diversities to complementary medical practices in order to meet different patients’ expectations and preferences. FCNMAM aims to collaborate with universities, local and international, to develop and consolidate its evidence-based knowledge and practices so as to position Malaysia as a regional centre of excellence in this emerging medical field.
